Los Pelambres Copper Mining Company Environmental Management Systems, Chile
GAC/E & E prepared an environmental impact assessment (EIA), environmental policy for modification of a mechanized pier, and developed monitoring plans. We also supervised implementation of a site procedures manual and general environmental management plans for natural resources, archaeology, protected areas, forested areas, and emergency management operations
Due to the major importance of the Los Pelambres copper ore extraction project and the IV Region in Chile, as well as the need to meet environmental regulations, GAC/E & E was retained to support the development of a permanent environmental strategy. Activities included the setup of an environmental management system to include both an environmental and occupational health department, in charge of defining environmental policies and regulations; and an internal affairs department. We also took part in the creation and distribution of project-related environmental regulation manuals and posters. Project staff participated in the preparation and submission of environmental commitment summaries and actively assisted the investment group in its strategic decision making; development of a permanent, continuously updated environmental project time line; and preparation and delivery of project-related presentations.
As the project advanced, we completed the EIA and environmental policy statement for the Modification of Mechanized Pier project, developed an environmental statement for the ongoing “Dissolved Air Flotation Facilities” project, and prepared the request for creation of a natural sanctuary (Ramsar site) for the ongoing Conchalí lagoon. We coordinated contractor bidding; supervised the development of environmental monitoring plans; and oversaw the implementation of the site procedure manual and the natural resource, archeological, protected area, forest fire, and emergency management plans. We also completed an additional site characterization, developed impact mitigation and treatment plans for acid mine drainage, and generated plans to mitigate impacts on acoustic and visual resources.
