Public Outreach Program for Indian Point Nuclear Power Plant, Buchanan, NY

To address post-9/11 concerns of local communities about a potential radiological event, E & E was retained to provide public information support for the Indian Point Nuclear Power Generation Facility emergency response plan.  The Indian Point facility has two operating units that provide approximately 2,000 MW of power.  As administrator of a grant from the Federal Emergency Management Agency, NYSEMO was responsible for implementing an effective, credible public outreach program to mitigate the impact of a radiological accident at the high-profile, publicly sensitive facility.

E & E’s comprehensive, three-year, nearly $700,000 public involvement effort focused on the population residing in the surrounding 10-mile EPZ that includes Westchester, Rockland, Orange, and Putnam Counties.  Program goals were to identify public concerns, share findings with the public, improve public understanding of emergency response planning, and enhance the effectiveness of the current public information and education program.  E & E was responsible for information gathering, public outreach, and public education.
