Industrial processes; natural and man-made disasters; and solid, liquid, and gaseous wastes all have impacts on human health that can be addressed with the right scientific approach. To produce solutions for protecting and improving human health, E & E conducts environmental data analyses, exposure and risk assessments, public education, regulatory compliance, emergency planning, and economic evaluations.

Projects

Statewide Bioterrorism Response Exercises, Louisiana Office of Public Health (OPH), Louisiana
Developing and providing 36 tabletop and full-scale exercises and associated planning meetings statewide that focus on development of realistic threat-based scenarios, each addressing the release of bioterrorism agents.

Carson River Mercury Investigation, Public Health Risk Assessment and Remediation, EPA Region 9
Planned and supervised the safe, low-cost removal of two large, contaminated tailing piles that posed the most imminent threat to public health. As part of the project, performed a human health and ecological risk assessment that demonstrated very high mercury levels but a generally healthy ecosystem.

Public Health Surveys for LNG Facility and Export Terminal, Natuna Island, Indonesia
For Exxon Research and Engineering, evaluated possible project-induced public health and economic impacts on the island villages. Determined that construction and operation of the proposed facilities would result in a change in land use from agriculture to industrial and involve relocation or lifestyle training of the indigenous population.

Public Health Claims for the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, Dammam, Saudi Arabia
Initiated public health monitoring and assessment studies that include health surveys, health risk assessment, clinical monitoring, long-term health studies, and data management to determine the costs of treating people made ill and for deaths associated with the Gulf War.

St. Louis Area Regional Response System (STARRS) Public Health Program, Missouri
Designed and delivered public health bioterrorism/disaster response tabletop exercises for response to critical incidents of pneumonic plague in the St. Louis metropolitan region. Also developed two videos to educate large employers and public officials regarding their role in mass prophylaxis distribution.
